The purpose of the color guard is to interpret the music that the marching band is playing. They use various equipment, including flags, rifles, and sabres, along with dance, to enhance the marching band show. The color guard performs with the marching band during home football games at halftime and at marching band competitions. At competition, the guard adds to the overall score of the band and is also judged separately.

Winter Guard is performed indoors on gymnasium floors during the winter and spring, where the guard performs unaccompanied by the marching band to pre-recorded music.

The Winter Guard competes independently in Winter Guard International (WGI) and TriState Marching Arts Circuit.
